WHY "FUNCTIONAL ART"?

As a carpenter, I strive to make things whose primary value is their usefulness. As an artist, my goal is to create an object that provides a uniquely beautiful look and feel for the user. When I can achieve both of those goals simultaneously, I consider it “functional art”.

UNIQUENESS

The pieces I create cannot be mass produced. Each board or lamp must be individually crafted. There will always be natural variations in the grain and colours of my materials and I use these differences to select the most appealing blend of textures and colours for each board.

Bentwood Lamination

I use a bentwood lamination process to craft the lamps and lighting fixtures I make.  It involves milling very thin strips of wood that can be steamed and laminated on a form to produce visually striking curves.

I typically use walnut and ash for this work due to their properties.

Note: all of my lighting fixtures required LED bulbs for safety.

MATERIALS

All of my boards and toaster tongs are finished using food grade mineral oil and beeswax. I provide a 2 ounce tin of food grade wax with every board to allow you to safely maintain your board after purchase.

All of the colours you see are those of the natural wood. I use no stains.

CUSTOM WORK

If the product you would like is not available I am happy to build it for you to your specifications and preferences if I can.

If you have need of a product outside of my typical product lines, I would love to discuss your needs. I have been asked for everything from rabbit hutches to rustic sliding barn doors to antique furniture restorations. I love to work my way through unique challenges.

BIOGRAPHY

1976 - Carpentry

I received my journeyman carpenter's certification in 1980, but I've been building things with wood since I was 10 years old.

2015 - RETIRED

After almost three decades of working outside the trade, my retirement offered me the chance to re-engage in my favourite pastime and my first project was to set up my shop in the garage.  It became my sanctuary. My happy place.

2023 - FOLKWOOD FUNCTIONAL ART

I began doing business as Folkwood Functional Art. My marketing was exclusively through the Jaffray/Baynes Lake Farmers Market. Now, I am hoping to increase my exposure through this website and possibly expand my business through online sales.

Stay tuned...
